Love What You Write

Come on, wake up and get some writing done! 🙂

Writing Wednesday – Sample

Okay, so I have brought back one of my trademark (well maybe!) blog post series. It’s Writing Wednesday.

A little back story, I started this series a very long time ago. I am a writer and I do a lot of writing. So I thought that I would share a sample each week of some of my writing. That being my school writing, personal writings, old writings or anything that I had put words in a special order to get something across.

On top of just samples of my writings, I am going to post some advice, things I have found and my progress on my current project(s).  Overall, Wednesdays will be all about my writing!

My writing for today will be a raw look at my current project.  It’s RAW!  Means that it had very little editing done to it.  I did go through and check for any spelling or really bad grammar but other than that, very little has been done to it.  Why?  Because I haven’t finished this current project and I don’t know if I am going to have to do a lot of editing to this or what.   But for the moment, I am sharing it with you.  I want you to know that I know it’s a work in progress. Nonetheless, I feel like sharing it with you and I haven’t really shared anything with you guys about my current writing project!   So, here we go!

The ship jerked causing Captain Christophe Shepherd to roll out of his bed and on to the floor. He wasn’t a spring chicken anymore but he wasn’t an old dog. Before he could stand, his second officer barged into his quarters and ordered the lights on.
“Sir,” his first officer spoke as he expended his hand to help the captain , “I’m sorry to have disturbed you, but you are needed on the bridge on the double.” His second officer’s soft blue eyes were tight and focused directly on his captain .
“What the hell is going on?” Christophe demanded as he stood up and reached over for his rob. Christophe had been a starship captain longer that his second officer was out of diapers; never has he been demanded on the bridge in the middle of the night.
“I understand if you are more than upset but,” he paused and rubbed his chin. He was struggling to grow a beard to show his actual age. “I don’t know how to tell you, but… You need to just go on the bridge. I think it might be the only way you’ll believe it.”
“What the hell? Why did the ship jerk? Did we loose navigation? What did we loose?”
“We didn’t loose anything, sir.” He stepped toward the door and pressed the button for the door. “We gained some -” he paused again and just pointed to the door.
“This better be worth it!” he replied as he tied his robe in front of him.
The pair silently traveled down the hallway and into the lift. The lift slowly opened up to the bridge.
The two men slowly walked onto the bridge. They came in through the back door which caused everyone to stop and turn to then. Christophe was not happy about being on the bridge during the night shift without his uniform on. In the very front of the bridge was a large screen that went from the ceiling to the floor and showed Jupiter. Just in front of the screen sat the pilot and the navigator. Between the two seats sat a toddler.
Christophe stepped back, place his hand in the air and looked at his first officer, “Why the hell is there a baby on my bridge?”
“That is what we gained,” he replied. He walked past the work stations on the port side and walked in front of the status station.
“Was no one paying attention to the lift doors?” He walked up to the status station. “Surely someone noticed a child walking up here.”
“No sir,” his second officer replied. “I was right here, checking in with Ensign Frey. I was facing the lift doors.” He looked back to the Ensign at the station. “Then he froze and pointed behind me. Just then, the pilots did the same thing. That is why the ship jerked. We were all startled by,” he paused and looked down to the child, “By the child.”
“Bullshit,” the Captain replied. “A child can not just show up on my bridge.” He leaned onto the main work station on the bridge. It was often nicknamed ‘mother hen’ since it over saw everything in and outside of the ship. “Is there any reports of missing children? Is our numbers off by chance?”
The Ensign looked at the Captain, “No sir; no reports of missing children. We are plus on our numbers.”
The Captain took a deep breath in and looked at his first officer. “It looks human,” he finally said.
The toddler looked over to the second officer and the captain. A large smile formed on the child’s face. It held a purple dog looking stuffed toy tightly in its hands. The toddler was silent. She had reddish hair and deep green eyes. Freckles covered all her exposed skin. The only thing on the child looked like an ancient potato sack with holes for her head and arms.
The lift doors opened and the new ship’s Doctor Hopkins walked on the bridge. “I was notified that I was needed on the bridge.” She walked over to the Captain and smiled at Commander Blackstone. “Is there an emergency?” She looked at Blackstone and noticed when he pointed just behind him. Her eyebrows raised as she looked at the child.
“What do you want us to do with the child?” First officer Blackstone asked.
The Captain sighed. “Take it to the clinic. From there we’ll figure out our next steps.” He looked over to the doctor. “I’ll be down tomorrow to see what you have found out about the child.”
“Do you mind if I assist the doctor?” Commander Blackstone asked as he stepped backwards and squatted toward the child.
“I didn’t realize that you -” Captain Shepherd stopped and looked at Blackstone. A small smirk crept across his face. “You may help the doctor bring the child down but I need to up here. We have an important meeting with the Martixkin. I don’t want you to wear yourself out.”
“Understood sir,” he reached out toward the child. He expected the child to panic but instead the child pulled herself up to her feet and waddled closer to him. “That’s it,” he softly spoke as she stepped toward him. Once she was close enough to him, he picked her up and stood up. The child giggled. Blackstone looked at Shepherd. His eyes were wide and his arms crossed in front of himself. “Are you alright, sir?”
“Yes, I’m fine,” he snapped back, “Just be careful, you don’t know what infections or diseases that child brings.”
Blackstone chuckled, “It’s only a child. I’m sure,” he paused and lifted the child above his head and then back to his side, “I’m sure she isn’t going to hurt you.” He walked around to where Shepherd and Hopkins were standing.
The Doctor smiled at the little girl. “Do you have a name?”
“Sam,” the little girl replied. She reached out to the captain. He immediately leaned backwards away from her reach.
“I think I shall go back to my quarters and try to get a little bit more rest before the day head of us,” he nodded his head and turned to the lift in the back. Just as he turned to leave, he felt a little hand touch the back of his balding head. Christophe quickly turned around and saw the little girl smile at him. Something inside him turned as he smiled back at her and lifted his hand up to her to grab. He looked at Blackstone and looked back at the little girl. “Maybe I’ll bring her down to the clinic. You should stay on the bridge.” He reached out for her and pulled her to him. The captain saw Blackstone’s face and patted him on the shoulder. “You will be able to see Hopkins later.”
“I thought that you were worried about her infecting us…” His sentence stopped as he watched Shepherd and Hopkins head toward the lift.
“With what? She’s a child. I’m sure she’s harmless.” He smiled and tickled her belly button. Her laughter filled the bridge. “Ill bring her down to the clinic and then I’ll go to my quarters to sleep.”
“Never-mind than, sir.” Blackstone smiled and bowed his head. “Sleep well sir.”

Okay, so there is that.  I hope you enjoyed it…  Tell me what you think!  Once I’m done with my project and I start editing, I will post again this little blurb and see if you can spot the differences!  🙂

Until next time!

Goal Statement

So, for the people that have been following me for a while know that I often post a goal statement.  I tend to do one at the beginning of the year and then another one sometime midway through.  For me, posting my goals out to the world holds me accountable to them.  (I have this odd thing about when I tell someone about what I plan to do and I don’t do it, I feel REALLY guilty and that makes me get it done.) So this isn’t going to be glamours or anything exciting, but just me sharing what I hope to achieve by the end of the year. {Side note, I do have some goals on here that I want to finish before the year is over and I’ll have those dates listed.  All the others are for the end of the year!} In December I will have another post about what I want to achieve for 2016! I can’t believe how fast this year is going!

Okay, so let’s get down to it.

First up, I am going to list off my goals for my blog.  I’ll try to make it as entertaining as possible but I know there is some people that are not big fans of lists! (What is wrong with you?)

First off, I want to get at least two posts done a week; one on Wednesdays that focuses on writing (it could be a writing sample, some writing advice, or progress on my own writing (and during NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo I will posting my updates on Wednesdays too!) .The other day will be Fridays, and it will be on any topic I choose or an random one!  I have a few already planned out for this month!  This doesn’t mean that I won’t have other posts throughout the week, but I am definitely will be putting out two a week!  On top of that, my goal is to add three other features by the end of the year.  They will be my path to publication, a monthly book review and maybe interviews of other writers or bloggers.  Before I can start the last two, I need to increase my viewership but don’t doubt me, I will try my best!  Also, I aspire to buy my own URL for my blog. I’ll think about moving over to WordPress.org at the end of this year! My path to publication won’t start until I can achieve my writing goals.

Which leads me to my next set of goals.  These are my writing goals.  To become a published author, I need to write AND finish some piece of work.

  • To achieve that, I aim to get at least 1000 words done everyday.  It doesn’t mean it has to be on the same project, but I need to get my butt in the chair and write EVERYDAY!   I desire that it will keep me grounded.
  • From that, I want to finish my first draft of my Camp NaNoWriMo project by the end of August.  I am aiming for a fifty thousand word count when it’s done, but since it’s a science fiction, I have a feeling it’s going to run a little longer.
  • By October 1st, I aim to have my editing done and have a completed second draft.  I’ll take a break with that project.
  • During the month of November, I plan to participate in (AND WIN) NaNoWriMo.  I plan to kick some butt and take names!  🙂  In October, I will have a blog post on how and what I plan to do. So me on the lookout!
  • By the end of the year I hope to find some trusted beta readers and have them read my project.  I will work on editing from that in the beginning of next year.  (but that will be revisited in December!)  {If anyone is interested before than, message me or get a hold of me how you would like. 😀 }

There are only a few extra life goals I have are just a few minor things.  I would like to improve my skill level with HTML.  Using WordPress requires that I know HTML and I only know the basics.  Improving that would be great.  Also, I would like to improve my Spanish skill. I took six years of Spanish through my traditional years of schooling and  I read Spanish really well, but I speak it like a preschooler.  It’s sad.  I live in area that has a lot of Spanish speakers and I think it might be able really helpful with my day to day life.  One last thing I would like achieve is, I would like to be able to read and finish one book a month.  To be a good writer, I need to be a good reader.  I am am sure I can do at least one book a month. Then maybe I’ll do a post of the book review?  Mhm…

Anyway, those are my goals for the rest of the year.  Of course, life likes to throw me a curve ball once in a while and things may change.  Maybe I’ll revisit this once a month to see how I am doing!  You will just have to wait and see!

Until next time…

Why I Write

I just love this blog post. Sums up so much! 🙂

update! (again) and a new writing goal

So sadly life has been getting in the way.  We have finally settled into our new place and got a decent rhythm with life.  Stuff has settled down so now I can focus more attention to my blog and my writing!  And boy, do I!

I have been terribly missing writing and the joys of being able to sit and type my thoughts.  I would love to share all the stories going on in my head.  It would be a wonderful experience for everyone around.  There is only one thing stopping me…  That would be sitting down and actually getting the writing done!

So here is my current (and temporary) goal.  For the next week I am going to work on sitting down and trying to write for two hours.  The reason for the two hours is I would like to do one hour of free-writing and other activities and then the other hour I would like to work on plotting out one my new projects.  Then I’m going to work on a monthly goal.  I think creating short term goals will help me get the long term goal achieved.  (So keep an eye out for my updates on my goals and stuff.)  But before I start dreaming about eating my cake, I need to get in the habit of baking a cake (or in my case, writing).

It’s going to be difficult since, my husband works full time and very long hours during the week. This means we have no idea when he is coming home.  This would make it difficult to schedule time to write.  Also, I have picked up a small part time job, every other weekend.  So that limits some possible hours for writing on the weekends.  Overall, this leaves little free time for me to focus on writing and not my writing.  And for the few who are a little confused, I have a beautiful six month little girl, who needs her mother and plenty of attention.  She means so much to me and I just hope to achieve this to improve our life.

This is going to be difficult.  But I am damned that I want to do this.  I am going to do this!  This is my passion, this is my job, this is what I feel like I am supposed to do.

What to join the fun?

Until next time….

Personal goals

This post may be on the duller side of things since I am currently working on in my day-to-day life.  As you may know, I am a first time stay at home mother with a four month old.  Things are known to change at the last moment.  Let’s keep it short and sweet.

One major area of my life I need to work on is my schooling.  I have a diploma in nursing but I have decided not to be come a nurse.  I love to help people and I love the science part as well.  I sadly have cold shoulder when it comes to working with others and it often doesn’t help much.  I don’t mean to be shy but to some people, this comes across as stand off-ish.  In the nursing world, it does not help being and reserved.  So after about a year of trying to find what I want to do in life, I think I would like to get into the finance world.  I would love to become an account or a bookkeeper.  Or maybe even a banker.  I think that it would be a wonderful thing to help people with their money.  Still haven’t iron this all out but My next goal in school is to go for my bookkeeping certificate this fall.  Then I’ll from there if I really like it and stuff.  In the meanwhile, I am going to read about bookkeeping and accounting.  That way I’ll get some head knowledge in and it might actually help me!

My other personal goal this year is to buy a house this year.  To be honest, no one I know have bought a house in the last ten years so this a whole new world for us.  I luck out and my cousin is pretty damn good at some things and he is willing to help us.  So for that, I am trying to learn as much as I can about mortgages, house donas, rates and so much more. So I have been reading a few books about the topic and I hope to learn more about it as I go.

Another goal of mine is all about self improvement. On my phone I have a few apps that me do that.  I have one that helps me with my Spanish and the other one is about html.  Hopefully in six months I will have a basic Spanish vocabulary so I can speak with others!  And at the same time I would love to have a a wonderful working level of knowledge of HTML.  So they are kinda like “my hobby” goals but I work on them in my spare time.

I have a few other goals that I may share at a later date, but I think I have revealed enough about my goals.  Just be on the look out, I’m going to start posting some really amazing stuff!  Thank you so much for joining this journey.

Goals for my writing

For the next set of blogs about my goals are going to be a little less blabbing and more meat. So, enjoy!

This is going to be really vague since I’m still trying to figure this one out for the long run.  My over all goal is to at least write for an hour three times a week.  On top of that, I am going to be blogging at least three times a week as well.  So that brings me up to five times a week.  At the moment I do not have any project planned or in mind. I have several started and a few in my head.  For someone else, this might be a huge lack of direction, but for me, this leaves me open!  Goal writing is all about getting to the meat of the what you want to achieve!

So here are a few things I would like to do with writing : I would like to get in the habit of writing for at least one hour a day.  I am hoping for free writing and some creative writing to be done during this time.  Also, I really want to create amazing content for my blog.  That involves writing as well and it is more of a specific kind of writing.  Also, for my blog and my writing, I am thinking of bringing back my “Writings Wednesdays”.  That was when I shared a piece of my creative writing with my blog followers.  I am thinking of getting that started in February.  It’s going to take some time to get all this stuff done and get the ball rolling.  But with enough will power I think I can achieve anything I put my mind to!

I also would love to write blog posts about apps I have found to be amazing, ways to save, useful things and many other topics like that. It seems to be a lot at once but slowly I will get there!

So this goal might not be as specific or as measurable as some of my other goals but it is a great start to getting my writing on track.  Once I get the ball rolling, I am going to revisit this in six months and really get this off the ground.  Just sit back and enjoy the ride!  🙂

Currently a work in progress!

Self improvement never happens over night.   So many people want the quick and easy solution for EVERYTHING!  That’s why weight loss, smoking cession, writing the next great American novel and so many other things never seem to happen.  It’s quite a sad state of affairs.

When I make a goal, I know that it will not happen overnight.  It won’t even happen within the week or month.  It will take time, weeks, months, and even years to happen.  It has taken a long time for me to realize this fact.  I hope that everyone out there who is reading this, realizes this too!

So, I am just going to kinda list the few goals I have for my life and the next year.  Then, throughout the next two weeks I am going to go into more detail about each one in a different blog post.  I am currently working on a lot of things to work on myself.

The first thing I am going to chit chat about is my goals for this blog.  I posted earlier this year that I really want this blog to be able my struggles with depression and all the many parts of life (being a mother, being a wife, being a blogger, being a writer, being a learner and so on and so on.)  I want this to be an outlet for me but a place where other people can learn from what I have done and tried.  I also want this blog to be a chronicle of sorts about my life and how I got to be where I am.  My one day goal is to be a published author; but, that doesn’t happen over night.  This will be my story about life.

The other thing I am working on is improving my writing.  I am currently working on blogging (this!) and working on writing more on a daily basis.  This is going to be one the hardest things to achieve since I am a full time mommy and full time wife.  I will find a way to achieve this.  It will take a lot of bouncing but I will get this done one day!  This will have to be taken with baby steps!

Another thing I am currently working on is getting into bookkeeping.  I know this sounds VERY weird for someone who dreams about becoming an author to take such a very uncreative career choice but for some odd reason, I have really taken a liking to it.  There is something about it that just seems to click with me so I am currently reading some books about the topic and I am looking into going to school (or taking a few classes) about it!  I’ll keep ya posted on it!

On top of all this, my husband and I are currently looking to buy our first house.  It is a very long process and there are so many steps to go through!  We are at the very first steps of the whole process and it is looking pretty exciting!

Overall, one of my main missions is to work on improving myself. I have been working on learning Spanish (I have an app on my phone).  I have have been trying to work on learning on HTML (which again I have an app for that).  I also have been talking free online classes about personal finances, bookkeeping and a few other things.  I’m slightly addicted to learning new things!

Okay, so that seems to be enough rambling from me!  I hope you enjoy this!  Please leave your comments below!  I would love to hear from you!  Be on the look out for more blogs in the upcoming future about things!

My New Year Resolutions!

2013 has been one hell of a year and my only hope for myself and for my family and friends, is it will be one of the best years to come! I’m hoping for bigger and better things but to do that, I have to get my butt in gear (and in the chair). So here is my goal statement for this year. Let’s see if I can do it!
One of the biggest things I want to achieve is getting into the habit of writing everyday a minimal of 2000 words. These do not have to be for a current project but it has to be words that are typed (or hand written). This is just to build the habit of writing daily. It takes 30 days to build a habit, why not make it a good habit?
My current goals for my current project ‘Memory’ are as follows: I have set up a tentative deadline for when I want the drafts to be done. The overall word count goal is 50,000 words. It’s on the smaller size but I think that is an attainable goal. You never know, maybe I’ll surpass it! Here is the breakdown of the goal deadlines: the first draft I want it to be done by March 31 2014. Then I will edit and rewrite for the second draft; the goal for that is to be done by June 30th 2014. My goal is to have my third draft completed by October 2014. I will have a few beta readers read it and give feedback for it (applications are open!). During the time of October, I will be deep in researching for agents and/or publishers to send my manuscript to and finalize who I’m sending it to! Hopefully, I will have a finished manuscript by the end of the month and will have it sent out before November rolls around! I am going to have it sent by this time next year!
Also, I will try my hand at NaNoWriMo this year but I will work out the details out when it gets closer. I will have to come up with an idea and have it all plotted out by before November rolls around. Trust me, I’ll keep you guys posted on that.
Also, as any good writer knows, reading is an important part of writing. My goal is to be able to finish and read one novel a month. Working full time and my aggressive deadline schedule with my project, I don’t know how much reading I will be able to get done but my goal is to get a book read a month.
Another small little goal is to get one short story written a month. It’s a small goal and kinda on the vague side but I really think that if I can write one short story a month it will be good. They don’t have to be the next best thing but just to get in the habit of writing anything and work on forming plots will be great for me to do! Maybe I will even share and maybe send them off to get published! Once more, I will keep you guys updated on how that goes!
On top of all of this, I really want to go to back to school. I just had graduated in May with a diploma in nursing but I feel that writing is my true passion and something that I have to use and enjoy. I have a few schools in mind and already have the gears in motion for that route. So the overall goal for my schooling is to get a school picked out and start attending by the end of the year.
Now time for my blog goals. I have deeply enjoyed working with this blog. It is a great outlet for me to great some writing out there with the world. So I have decided to focus a lot more on my blog. The first thing I want to do is to have at least one blog post a week but hopefully two a week. The topics will vary from updates about me and my writing but also about how-to’s about writing and other things I know about. (I am also thinking of helping my husband with his tech business with blogging and content building.) Also, I need to work of building readership and increase my page view count. If I can turn my blog into a resource for people – beginning authors– that would be a dream come true. I am also going to refresh how my blog looks like and refresh my widgets that seem to clutter my blog. So stay tuned for the changes. I hopefully will have the blog all looking pretty by the end of January but I’m thinking sooner.
One more little thing I want to work on this year is on my freelancing opportunities. I signed up for Elance in December but I haven’t finished my profile completely and I haven’t gotten all the samples I have looking all delicious. So I am going to work on making my profile look amazing and start trying to get work through there!
Okay, so I have shared my new resolutions with you, what about yours? Please share bellow. I would love to hear from you! Until next time, keep your head up, it gets better. J

Goals Goals Goals

This will be one of a few posts I put up today. So you have been warned.
Its the last day of 2013. So there will be a lot announcements about people wanting to better themselves and that this year will be the year for people to improve themselves or do what they always wanted or make other self-oriented goals. I will admit, I will be on that bandwagon but not for the same reasons as other people.
I am a strong believer in writing things down. It creates a connection and – indirectly – puts it in stone. And when I say it, I mean anything you write down. Your brain remembers things better when more than just one process is involved.  When you write down your goals, you remember what words you wrote but you also remember the actual action of writing down those words down. Also, another benefit of writing your goal down is it makes it more real. It makes it more concrete. The left side of your brain will love this. It is now given structure and a deadline. The right brain may not be completely happy but it now has something to create. For me, I tent to write my goals down and then post them (to a blog or to a social media site).  It’s not for the attention but it to remind myself that once I post it, others will have seen it and in the back of my mind that makes me have to follow through with it.  Even though no one may have read it, it is out to the world and makes me feel that I achieve what I wrote.  Not everyone does this, but for me, it helps.
Keep in mind that when you go to write down your goal, there are a few things that you need to remember.  First off, make sure your goals are reasonable.  Make sure that the goal you want to achieve is something that is important to you.  Just as important, be specific.  Do not just put ‘run a mile’.  It’s too broad and almost sets you up for failure.  On top of that, know your limitations.  Do not put down “go skydiving” when you are scared of looking out a second story window. Be logical. If sometime in the future you want to skydive but you really can’t bring yourself to even look out a second story window maybe that will be your goal.  Maybe you will be able to look that window and maybe you will look out the third story window as well.  That brings me to my next point, you have to set (a realistic) deadline.  This will be when you want to get this done.  Again, be reasonable and understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day.
I could go on and on about goal writing but I will leave you with these little guidelines.

So, now that I have shared these few steps with you, I will post my year goals using the advice I just shared with you. Enjoy and stay tuned!  🙂
